ABOUT SAMMY & HIS LION

Sammy and His Lion is a book series that was born out of a desire to combine the author’s history as a Pre K teacher, his experiences as a young father and poet and his twenty year tenure with the Broadway rendition of Disney’s: The Lion King.

More specifically, the author wanted to write a book that will give young people lasting tools to help them handle adversity in all its forms,  knowing that with a strong foundation, those same young people will find it easier to stand up for themselves, for others and for what’s right as they grow!

The series uses channeling your “Lion Inside” as a metaphor for finding the courage to face problems head on even when you are afraid and the importance of leaning on family and community during those times.

It was also important that the book feature the relationship between a Black father and son, that the passing on of traditions be an integral part of their relationship and that nurturing and sensitivity between male characters be centered in order to break down toxic ideals about perceived masculinity.

These themes are all woven into a fun rhyming story, making it not only easy to read, but also creating easy to remember mantras that will help young people recall the words and find THEIR “Lion Inside’ whenever the situation calls for it!
